Calendar exceptions: different settings per calendar

Set a shared default for the whole sync, then override it for one destination calendar. This needs a Pro plan.

It lives inside Appearance, under the shared settings.

The usual case: you mirror Work and Personal, and you want the work calendar to see nothing but "Busy" while the personal calendar shows real titles. One sync, two treatments.

How to set one up

1. Open the sync and go to Appearance.
2. Set the shared default first. That's what every copy gets unless overridden — for the example above, Use original title.
3. Open Calendar exceptions and pick your work calendar.
4. On that calendar's exception, set the title to Title says "Busy".

Anything landing in Work now reads "Busy". Anything landing in Personal keeps its real title.

The direction that trips people up

An exception describes the calendar events arrive in, not the calendar they came from. You're answering "what should copies look like when they land here", not "what should this calendar send out".

People set it backwards the first time and then find the mask on the wrong side.

What you can vary per calendar

Everything in Appearance: title, colour, privacy, descriptions, guests, reminders, availability, location, and whether the SYNCDATE line appears on the copy.

What you can't

Filters. There is one setting for each of these and it applies across the whole sync:

• which events are skipped at all
• the accepted/maybe/all reply filter
• day-and-hour rules and special event types
• how far ahead the sync reaches

So "Work gets only my accepted meetings, Personal gets everything" isn't achievable with an exception. Build two one-way syncs pointed at each other and give each its own filters.

Colour by source

Colour is the one setting that can also be decided by where an event came from rather than where it lands. Above the colour swatches, switch from One color for everyone to Match source calendar, and everything from your work calendar is one colour wherever it goes, everything from a client's is another.

Colour is the only thing the source side controls. Every other setting is decided by the calendar events land in.

Known limitations

• Pro only. On Free and Plus there's one set of appearance settings for the whole sync. On Plus, the workaround for asymmetry is two one-way syncs pointed at each other, and it costs a second sync against your plan's count.
• Existing copies don't change until the sync runs again. Adding an exception re-renders copies on the next run, not the moment you save.
• Downgrading from Pro stops exceptions applying and every copy falls back to the shared default. The exception isn't deleted — it comes back if you upgrade again.
• An exception is per destination calendar, not per pair. You can't say "copies from A landing in B look like this, but copies from C landing in B look like that" — except for colour.
